Our adjustment is going well as our family has relocated to Homestead, Florida, about the same distance from Miami as Provo is to Salt Lake City. We have placed an offer on a beautiful 3 bedroom home and the offer has been accepted, so we hope to be moving in around the end of July.

Ben has taken over the Harbor Freight Tools in Cutler Bay, Florida. He is enjoying the new position and the work there. We have been living in a small 2 bedroom apartment on the border of Homestead and Florida city. If you find Florida City on a map you'll see it's the last city before Key Largo, so yes, we are very close (about 20 minutes) to Key Largo and VERY far south, which means it's hot and humid and wonderful. We are enjoying the warm weather, but not so much the bugs that come with it. Ben gets to ride his motorcycle everywhere, which is slightly crazy considering Florida has THE WORST DRIVERS IN THE U.S. It's funny how people used to say that Utah drivers were so terrible, having lived there for so long and now here, there's no comparison.

Haven is now three months old. She has been a very happy baby. She gets fussy a couple of times a day, when she gets tired or hungry or just doesn't get her way. She can't stand being on her back or her stomach, she always wants to be standing or sitting upright.

We think she might be starting to teeth as she seems to be sucking on her hand ALL THE TIME. She's still a sweetheart despite it and seems to handle mosquito bites ok. They're hard to avoid here. Here's a small video of her:

Aunt Deb was kind enough to send a few baby toys with us when we moved to Miami and Haven's favorite has been the Johnny Jump-up.

Haven's photo birth story

So it's been a few weeks since we added anything to our family blog. I think we were both planning on taking more photos and writing more. I know Hannah's been working on Haven's birth story as told by her perspective but I don't know if it's completed yet. We will, of course, add it when she's finished. In the meantime we thought we would share, for those who haven't yet seen, Haven's "birth story" via photos. We were blessed to have one Hannah's friends, a photographer named Michelle Cavender, present in the hospital with us when Hannah gave birth and she took some amazing pictures some of you have seen already on Hannah's facebook. I've included the link below if you'd like to see them, they really are amazing. Hannah also had some maternity pictures taken that are really breathtaking, but I don't know if she's shared them yet. I might take the liberty to do that soon, if not just a few of them.

Catching Haven's smiles

So Haven doesn't smile much, but when she does it's SO cute! She mostly scowls because she's always angry at somebody -- usually whoever took her food or pacifier away. But when she's sleeping I like to think she remembers things from back home with Heavenly Father and you can sometimes catch her smiling ever so briefly. She is a week old today and I caught this on camera early this morning- she tries to make you laugh first with her eyes all over the place. Then if you listen closely to the audio, she hears the toilet flush and immediately smiles. Its not till after the first minute, so stay with it. I tried to upload the video but I think it must be too big because it gets an error every time I do. I'll put it on you tube then put the link below:

I caught this one too:

Baby hiccups, Gma & Gpa Stancliff

Sorry this is kind of dark, but it was so cute I wanted to share it! Haven sounds like a little squeaker toy when she has the hiccups, so we got it on camera a couple nights ago to share with y'all.

We also got some pictures of Grandma and Grandpa Stancliff holding Haven when they came to visit us March 2nd.

Haven Nova Stancliff - 1 day old

From Hannah's hospital room on Feb. 25, 2013

Day 1: Today is Haven’s first day of existence. She was born last night, February 24, 2013. I’m so excited to have her in our family. The birth went smoothly, she was healthy and hasn’t had any problems feeding.
It’s such a joy to watch Hannah and the baby bonding. She’s been nursing, and I’m really glad. I can tell those two are going to be really close for a long time.

I thought today about how anxious I am to give her a blessing. I hope to be able to do that soon. I specifically wanted to bless her with good friends in her teenage years. When I was young I didn’t  understand how important that was. My mother did, and I’m grateful for it now. She put up with years of me angry at her for never approving of Quinn, who although in many ways was a great friend, in many ways was not a good influence on me. The friendships I made in high school definitely helped define me, and I pray Haven will be blessed with good friends in those same pivotal years.

It’s a strange experience being a new father. You want the whole world for your child but the heavy part is knowing that any good you want for your child will in large part come from you- how you raise them, how you treat them, what kind of example you set for them. It seems logical that if you want an intelligent child you need to help them develop their intellect at home. If you want a spiritual child you need to teach them the gospel and how to live and love it in the home. If you want a physically sound child you need to create opportunities for them to grow in those ways, but it all comes down to the home. Know these things I worry that I won’t have enough time with her. Not that I think my life will be short, only that I know I work a lot, and my selfish nature often takes me to extracurricular activities before and/or after work. Looking at my little girl now none of those extracurricular things seems to matter in comparison to what kind of home life I want her to have and how present I want to be as a father.

I think I will have to pray every day to be more selfless because I have a long way to go. Thank goodness she has Hannah to make up for what I lack.

We look at Haven and talk about her features and potential as if any aspect of her tiny being really reflects her capability. I’m not sure that it does, but it doesn’t keep us from having high hopes. She has a strong grip, beautiful long fingers and fingernails, long feet and a beautiful long body. She seems to me to have big ears, but they’re the same shape as Hannah’s ears so I think that as the rest of her body grows her ears will not. Hannah and I were both surprised at how much hair she had when she was born. I was very much looking forward to that, to seeing how much hair she had. Although I think the color will stay (same color as Hannah’s hair) I think her hair will probably fall out then grow back in in the next few months.

I’m so excited to be a father. Getting the house and everything ready, collecting all the baby stuff this past month has been a great part in helping me prepare. There have been many friends and family members who were more than happy to offer help and advice. We had two beautiful baby showers with lots of generous friends and family in attendance. We are very very blessed. I hope we can be the kind of parents Haven needs. We love her so much!
